Getting Started With Garage Storage Systems

If there’s one thing I never seem to have enough of it is storage space. It seems like every home that has been built in the last 10 years, have less attic and closet space, while more square footage. This means that garage storage systems have become more important because while the size of the house itself is gotten bigger garages have not gotten bigger. If you drive a large vehicle, that means there’s very little space to work with.

Now there are several different styles of garage storage systems out there. So, it is worth taking the time to do a little research and find out the different companies and the products they offer.

The most important thing is going to be deciding what is important to you and what your storage needs are. For instance, if you work in the garage or lot and you have a lot of tools to work with, your storage needs will obviously be tool related. Perhaps setting up a rack on the wall that has different pegs that you can hang each of your tools from, or having a workbench along the back and various containers to house your equipment will be the best choice for you.

On the other hand, if most of your extra stuff has to do with kids’ toys and outdoor events and things of those nature you may need storage space more for like a hanging bicycle rack, or pulley system to hold your canoe up high. This way you can park underneath it and not take up too much space.

It seems like the key for garage storage in general is to make sure that you’re getting the most out of the space you have. It doesn’t matter if you only have a one car garage or if you have a three car garage. You do the best with what you have to work with.

In order to make this work, you have to know the amount of space you have to work with. For instance, if you know that you have to park your car in there as well as create some storage space. Then it would be important to park your car and measure the distance that you have from your car to the wall so that you know, how deep and how large any sort of shelving or cabinetry can be when creating your storage system.

In addition, if you are going to be hanging things from the ceiling. It will be important to locate trusses that you’ll be able to screw into as well as. Find out how much height difference there is between where you will park your car and where the item will hang. A kayak may only take up a foot from the ceiling in terms of overhead space, while a bicycle may be 3 feet from ceiling to where it’s done. Anyone make sure that when you hang your bicycle and try to park the car you don’t scrape your car into the hanging bike.

These are just a few of the things to think about when designing your garage storage systems. Hopefully it’s been helpful in getting you started.
