Reputable new home builders aren’t always easy to find. Knowing where to turn for advice will help you choose one who is capable of building your dream home. It will also help you avoid costly problems down the road.
First time home designers, whether experienced home owners or not, sometimes find themselves at the mercy of unscrupulous new home builders & contractors. They may encounter a number of different problems. These may range from jobs not being completed by their set dates to contractors abandoning projects altogether and disappearing with clients’ money in the process.
The vast majority of new home builders & contractors are honest. However, honesty does not mean that they cannot be incompetent, inexperienced or unprofessional. When you’re making an investment this big, it’s worth putting in the extra time and effort to fully investigate your options.
This is doubly true for first-timers who have never built a home based on custom plans before. Here are five tips for finding new home builders who can do the job right for a reasonable price:
1) Ask people whom you know and trust: You probably know at least one person who has had a home built with customized house plans. You may even know more than one.
These are usually the best people to start speaking to when you design your own home. The best person to talk to about building a home from scratch is someone with experience.
Not only will such people have good pointers, it’s safe to assume that they’ve already done their homework. Ask them which new home builders they considered for the task as well as how they chose the builder that they decided to work with.
You can also ask them if they are happy with the service that they received as well as the overall result. Lastly, ask them what they might change if they were given the opportunity to do things over. This is the kind of information that will get you off to a good start on your quest for your dream home.

5) Take the time to shop around and learn more about your candidates: You’d never walk into a car dealership and buy the first car you see. You shouldn’t choose a new home builder this way either. Select between three to five local contractors using the methods described above.
Next, spend time interviewing each one. Ask questions such as:
* How long have you been in business?
* Who are your sub-contractors?
* Will there be a general manager on site every day?
* Are your price quotes firm?
* How can I get in touch with you when I need you?
Ask for three to five references as well and take the time to contact them personally. It pays to ask them about their experiences with this builder. This whole process is likely to be time-consuming, but it will let you know about the quality of their workmanship and the reliability of their services.
